This is also an upcoming project that is in the design phase. The concrete side tables will slide from nearby living area to add additional seating when needed. The dining table top will be polished concrete and the supports will be made from plywood.

The sink is installed and looks fantastic, well, if you can see past the blue walls and the rough plumbing. The client went for paint grade wood for the vanity and a lighter grind on the concrete to fit his budget. Those minor changes aside, the finished product is an exact match to the rendering! We look forward to posting the before and after photos soon.

How Does Life Cycle affect Climate Change?
Concrete is a locally produced material shipped only short distances – another environmental and energy saving plus. Its primary components, sand and gravel or crushed stone, are among the most universally available materials. Accordingly, as wood and steel become scarce materials, developing nations are relying more on concrete.

Putting CO2 emissions into perspective

The manufacture of cement produces about 0.9 pounds of CO2 for every pound of cement. Since cement is only a fraction of the constituents in concrete, manufacturing a cubic yard of concrete (about 3900 lbs) is responsible for emitting about 400 lbs of CO2.[1] The release of 400 lbs of CO2 is about equivalent to[2]:

* The CO2 associated with using 16 gallons of gas in a vehicle
* The CO2 associated with using a home computer for a year
* The CO2 associated with using a microwave oven in a home for a year
* The CO2 saved each year by replacing 9 light bulbs in an average house with compact fluorescent light bulbs

We Template for a Perfect Fit

The template is made.

Counters installed. Keep in mind this is a progress photo, much more sealing and waxing to come…

When you order a concrete counter top it is made in our shop, but first we will come and make a template, in wood, once the old counter tops are removed or new cabinets are installed. The template is scribed to your walls and cabinets to ensure a perfect fit. Even new construction is often out of square. After the template, you are left without a counter but we can put up temporary plywood counters if you need to use your kitchen while you are waiting for your new counters to be made.

We will post the final before and after photos of this project once the client completes the new back splash and installs their new stainless range. So check back soon.

P.S. here you can see a preview of the integrated fruit bowl. The kids wanted to eat their morning cereal out of this bowl but their parents said no.

Custom Concrete Sink Part 2

The custom vanity with integrated sink has just been taken out of the mold. The bathroom floor has been tiled and the custom cabinet from WCW Cabinets in Rosendale arrived and it is absolutely perfect! The wall mounted faucet has been plumbed and the sink is a few days from being finished. There are many more hours of hand finish work ahead of us. The color is a platinum gray and Michael will be lightly grinding the concrete to expose some of the aggregate and sand. Look for the finished product soon!

Custom Sink Mold Process Part 1

The sink mold for the custom bathroom sink is started. This is the shape roughed out, more fine finish work to follow. The sink will be supported on the cabinet frame which must be made to support the weight of this rather substantial piece. The view you are looking at is of the bottom of the sink. Hopefully the pour will happen next week. We will keep you posted here!
